Has someone asked you what you got for your mom for Mother’s Day, or what did you get for your mother on this highly important occasion? Research shows that gifts this year will be more expensive than ever before, around $274 dollars per household, or 12% increase from 2022 and 40% from 2019. Based on my observation, people try to ignore inflation when it comes to getting a gift for mom. Some of my colleagues said they will spend their last penny to make their mother happy, while others procrastinate and wait for the best last-minute Mother’s Day gifts. From beauty products, to flowering plants, a homecooked meal, jewelry, or a wonderful gift card, Moms will appreciate any thought and effort.

Where did the idea of recognizing mothers come from? The idea started in America when a woman called Anna Jarvis held a small memorial service for her own mother on May 12, 1907. Most places in America have then observed the day, and President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday, celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Most certainly, each mom is special in her own birth right. Some mothers say they do not want anything, just like my mother used to say. But I always bought her something anyway. She liked exquisite cards and roses. I sent the best-looking basket of roses adorned with an elegant pearl necklace and a card on her special day. I feel her hug for eternity. I would spoil my mom with the most beautiful peach roses and pearls in the world if she was alive today. Her tender, loving care for me will remain in my heart, and in my mind. I have made a tradition of offering peach roses on the altar at church in her memory on Mother’s Day and I am certain that she sees them.
